Hair Porosity & Why It's More Important Than Curl Types!

Hair Porosity & Why It's More Important Than Curl Types!

Hair porosity is the single most important thing you should figure out at the beginning of your natural hair journey! Knowing your porosity allows you to choose the best products and methods that will aid in your hair retaining maximum moisture! 🥰

What is hair porosity?
• Hair porosity determines how well your hair absorbs and retain water/moisture!
• There are three types of hair porosities: low, medium, & high!

Breakdown of each porosity

• Low Porosity: Hair cuticle is tightly packed, repels water requiring a longer time to open the cuticle and saturate it. This requires more effort to retain moisture.

• Medium Porosity: Hair cuticles are balanced allowing water to flow in & out easily. Hair retains moisture much easier!

• High Porosity: Hair cuticles are raised allowing moisture in quickly, but loses it just as quickly!

How to determine my porosity?

• We recommend the float test!
• Take a CLEAN product free strand & place it in a cup of water for 5-10 minutes. Where your hair is positioned after the 10 minutes will reveal your porosity.
• Low porosity will remain floating at the top.
• Medium porosity will float in the middle.
• High porosity will sink down to the bottom.
